| Tyler Hansbrough wasn’t the only reason North Carolina’s performance this season was a surprise. Originally a walk-on, Noel evolved into one of the better players in the ACC. Despite his considerable athletic ability and strength, though, his perimeter (ballhandling and passing) skills will have to continue to improve before he’ll begin earning NBA paychecks. |

| The Tar Heels' most experienced returning player • Only player returning who scored in the national championship game win over Illinois • Played 20 minutes in the championship game and was on the floor primarily for defensive purposes in the final minutes • Is the leading returning scorer and rebounder from a year ago • Averaged 3.9 points last year, the lowest scoring average by UNC's leading returning scorer since at least the end of World War II (previous was Ed Cota, 8.1 ppg in 1999-2000) • Has played in 96 games and has 480 career points, an average of 5.0 per game • Has made 20 starts, 17 of which came in his freshman year • Has played all of the frontcourt positions • Played mostly at small forward as a junior • Became an outstanding defensive presence, often rotating with Jackie Manuel to guard the opponent's best perimeter scorer • Paid his own way to compete as a freshman after turning down grant-in-aid offers from Division I football programs, including Carolina • Awarded a scholarship prior to his sophomore season • Has shot better than 53 percent from the floor in his career • Scored in double figures 12 times with a career-high of 21 against DePaul on March 18, 2003 • Also had a career-high 11 rebounds in that game |
