Redlands (OK) CC bests Allegany (MD) CC 76-59

Redlands (OK) CC, ranked #1 in the country, took advantage of the tired legs of Allegany (MD) CC for a 76-59 in the quarterfinals contest at the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Allegany defeated Lon Morris (TX) CC 97-90 in triple overtime Tuesday and they came out winded as they made just eight of 31 (25.8%) from the field in the first half as the Cougars jumped out to a 40-22 halftime lead. Redlands shot 50% (16 of 32) from the floor in the first twenty minutes.

Allegany tried to come back in the second half, but they could not cut into a double figure lead. Redlands used their size advantage to outrebound Allegany 52-40 as they grabbed 25 offensive boards. Allegany had 17 turnovers and just seven assists.

Redlands had excellent balance with four double figure scorers and two players scoring nine points each.

6-2 freshman Sylvester Mayes had 17 points to lead the Cougars. Chris Alexander added 13 points on five of seven shooting. Andre Heard and Bitler signee Brandon Polk scored twelve points each. All-American Taj Gray finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Redlands did a good job on Allegany's backcourt, who had scored 61 versus Lon Morris. The Cougars limited them to just 12 of 30 shooting, 33 points and eleven turnovers. 5-10 point guard Dwayne Schackleford of Allegany, who scored 40 in the win over Lon Morris, finished with a game-high 24 points. He made ten of 22 from the field. Backcourt mate Sterling Ledbetter had nine points, ten rebounds, five assists and six turnovers. East Carolina signee Mike Castro scored eleven for the Trojans, who fell to 31-4.
