Redlands defeats Vincennes 86-75 in NJCAA opener

#1 Redlands (OK) CC opened play in the 2004 NJCAA tournament with an 86-75 win over Vincennes (IN) University CC. The Cougars improved to 33-1 with the win, while Vincennes, ranked #7 in the country, fell to 27-5.

Redlands led 35-30 at halftime as Brandon Polk scored ten points in the first half. Freshman Tyrone Young paced Vincennes with 15 first half points as he made seven of

 

Vincennes was hampered by turnovers in the first half as they had 14 miscues. Carl Landry and D'Andre Payton had five turnovers each in the first twenty minutes.

 

The Cougars expanded the lead to 57-39 within eight minutes of the second half. The Trail Blazers cut the margin to 73-67 with two free throws by Dale Parsons, but Redlands scored six straight points to go up by ten. Vincennes made back-to-back three pointers to get to within five at 80-75, but Polk scored on an inside basket to make the score 82-75. However, Andre Heard sealed the win with four straight free throws.

 

Heard, who entered the game averaging 8.1 points per game, will likely see his recruitment soar as he finished with a team-high 21 points. He made six of eleven shots from the field, three of five from beyond the arc and all six free throws. Polk, who signed with Butler, scored 19 points on eight of 13 shooting. All-American Taj Gray struggled with his ballhandling and finishing around the basket, but still finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Vincennes head coach Dan Sparks called Gray, "probably the best big man we played against this season." 6-2 freshman Sylvester Mayes added 13 points for the Cougars.

 

Young led all scorers with 29 points as he made 13 of 20 shots from the field and three of five from three-point range. Landry had 17 points and eleven rebounds, but also had seven turnovers. 5-11 freshman Andre Turner had twelve points and Parsons added eleven. However, Parsons was just three of 15 from the field and one of eight from beyond the arc.
