The Academy National Invitational has high expectations after an outstanding debut. However, the country’s top teams and players plus plenty of local Houston talent may mean this year’s event is even better. The ANI will be held December 27-30 with the Texas division and the national division titles on the 30th. The venue is the Campbell Center, which seats 4,700 fans. The event has 7 of the eight national team ranked in USA Today’s preseason Top 20, including three teams among the top four.

There are several outstanding matchups in the national division.

The event tips off with Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill vs. Memphis (TN) Booker T. Washington at 11:00 a.m. Oak Hill was ranked #1 preseason by USA Today and finished second last season in College Basketball News’ Top 25. They recently lost to Akron (OH) St. Vincent- St. Mary and will be angry after a rare loss. They are 65-1 the past two seasons. The Warriors are led by 6-8 Ivan Harris (who signed with Ohio State), 6-2 Marcus Williams (Connecticut) and 6-3 J.R. Reynolds (Virginia). Seniors 6-9 Byron Joynes, 6-7 Jarvelle Scott and 6-6 Dion Dacons and 6-2 junior Isaiah Swann are all talented players for head coach Steve Smith. The Warriors have won four national titles in the last nine seasons.

They will face Memphis (TN) Booker T. Washington, who finished 26-4 last season. They are led by 5-11 junior Andre Allen, who became the first sophomore to win Tennessee's AA Mr. Basketball award. He averaged 18.3 points and 8.4 assists last season and helped lead the team to a state championship as a freshman. They also return two other starters in junior guards James Hooper and Damion Robertson.

Seattle (WA) Rainier Beach, ranked #12 preseason by USA Today faces Winston-Salem (NC) R.J. Reynolds at 2:00 p.m. The Vikings are led by 6-4 twins Rodrick Stewart and Lodrick Stewart, who both signed with Southern Cal. However, the defending state champs are more than a two-man team as they return four starters. They welcome 6-7 transfer Josh Love from Auburn (WA) High. The Vikings also have 6-10 junior Chester Giles and 6-6 sophomore Terrance Williams. They defeated West Aurora (IL) High in the recent KMOX Shootout. Their opponent, Winston-Salem (NC) R.J. Reynolds, finished 26-6 and won its third straight Class 4A state championship. They are led by 6-8 Keith Foster (East Carolina), 6-7 Reyshawn Terry (North Carolina), 6-9 Eddie Greene (James Madison) and 6-7 Jason Bohlander. Point guard Frank Brown and 6-7 Erikais Kaupaitis are also talented players.

New York (NY) Rice (29-2) has five city titles in the last eight years and returns three starters. They won the New York Federation Class A and Catholic League champion last season. They welcome back 7-3 Shagari Alleyne, who signed with Rutgers. 6-6 Arturo Dubois and 6-2 Russell Robinson will add offense and 6-8 freshman Curtis Kelly is an intriguing prospect. They will face Westchester (CA) High (32-2), who won its first state title since 1998 but they lost four key players in Brandon Bowman (Georgetown), Brandon Heath (San Diego State), Hassan Adams (Arizona) and Ashanti Cook (Georgetown). However, the cupboards is not bare as the Comets feature returning starters Trevor Ariza (UCLA) and
