Fort Bend Marshall defeated South Garland 71-64 in the opening game of the 2004 Academy National Invitational. Marshall jumped out to a 23-13 lead after the first period, but South Garland rallied and kept the game throughout.

David Devezin, who signed with Texas A&M, led all scorers with 19 points and six assists. He made seven of 14 from the field and was four of six from the line. Jamaal McCoy and 6-foot-7 senior C.J. Webster, who signed with Texas State, added twelve points each and Jonathan Frazier finished with eleven.

South Garland was paced by 6-foot-3 junior Trent Boone with 25 points. He made seven of 14 shots from the field. Terrel Harris, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who inked with Oklahoma State, had 21 points for the Colonels. He made eight of 13 shots from the field and was five of six from the line.
