The Carbondale (IL) High Terriers battled the Lynwood (CA) High Knights through four quarters, so it only seemed fitting that they would go into overtime. Carbondale scored the first five points of overtime, but Lynnwood rallied to cut the lead to one at 70-69. However, the Terriers scored six straight as they defeated Lynnwood 78-73 in overtime.
Carbondale, who finished fourth in last year's Illinois AA State Tournament with a 28-7 record, trailed 25-17 after the first period and was down 352-9 at halftime as 6-foot-8 senior Jerry-
Davon Jefferson
, who signed with
UNLV
, scored 16 points in the first half.
However, they outscored Lynwood 21-15 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Phillip Fayne, a 6-foot-3 sleeper, led the Terriers with 25 points. He made eight of 17 shots from the field and seven of ten. He is hearing from Southern Illinois and Western Illinois as well as Division II schools Lewis and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, but his recruitment should pick up. He posted a 24 on his ACT. 6-foot-7 junior Manual Cass had 22 points as he made nine of 15 shots from the field. 6-foot-2 senior point guard
Ray Nelson
, who left Ullin (IL) Century and 5-foot-11 senior point guard Michael DeWalt, each scored ten points. Southern Illinois signee, 6-foot-4 senior
Josh Tabb
, made just two of 13 as he finished with five points.
Jefferson led the Knights with 30 as he made ten of 22 shots from the field and nine of 13 from the line. He added eleven rebounds and three blocked shots, but had eight turnovers. 6-foot-3 senior
Seketoure Henry
, scored 14 points. 6-foot-6 junior
Josh Guillory
and 6-foot-2 junior Tim McLauren, who are among some of the top players in the state from the Class of 2006, each scored nine points.
