Southeastern beats Chipola 72-51 to advance

Defending NJCAA national champion Southeastern (IA) CC appeared poised for another title as they defeated Chipola (FL) CC 72-51 to advance to the NJCAA Tournament semifinals in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The Blackhawks used an aggressive, trapping defense to force the Indians to shot just six of 22 (27.3%) from the field in the first half as they opened up a 31-22 lead. Chipola was unable to seriously challenge as Southeastern expanded the lead to as many as 23 points.

Southeastern was led by Kelvin Pena with 23 points. He made eight of 12 from the field and seven of ten from three-point range. UTEP signee Ivan Almonte added eleven and Benito Flores and Marvett McDonald had ten points each.

Mario Jointer led Chipola with 22 points. He made just seven of 19 shots, but sank five three-pointers. Vas'shun Newborne added 14. Je' Kel Foster who is getting several high major looks, was just one of 14 from the field as he scored four points. Coppin State transfer Deke Thompson was held to two points.
