Webster Groves, who returned all five starters from last year's team, used their experience and depth to overwhelmed Portland (TN) High 72-43, despite McDonald's All-American candidate Corey Brewer scoring 34 points.

Corey Brewer scored 20 of his team's 22 first half points, but the Panthers trailed 35-20 at the break as his teammate made just one of eight field goal attempts.

Brewer finished with 34 points on 14 of 32 shooting from the field. He made five of six from the line. His teammate connected on just four of 16 from the field and missed all four free throws.

The Statesmen got excellent balance as four players reached double figures and six scored eight or more points.6-0 senior D.J. Conners led the way with 16 points.6-0 senior Daron Harris and 6-3 senior Darrell Jackson had 13 points each. Jackson, a standout quarterback, will visit Missouri this weekend. He visited Illinois this past weekend, causing him to miss the season opener. Jackson expects to make his college decision sometime next week. 6-0 sophomore Justin Taylor added twelve for the Statesmen, who improved to 3-0.

Portland fell to 4-2.
