Ironically, Joe Krabbenhoft has suffered a
borken fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot on the first day of practice as
freshman. He had a screw put in it and returned to start the last five games
that year. The screw made that bone stronger than original, according to his
father Kelby.
The recovery time is expected to be relatively quick since the bone was
not fractured. His father joked that “his only problem may be getting through
security these days in airports!”
Kelby said that they have received “get well soon cards” from Wisconsin
head coach Bo Ryan, the whole Kansas staff, the Notre Dame coaches and others.
He said that best of all was the call from Kansas assistant Dooley at Kansas who
told that that freshman J.R. Giddens, who has become a friend to Joe, broke the
same bone in August this summer and also had a screw put in. Dooley also told
them that Kansa recruit Aelxander “Sasha” Kaun had the same thing last summer
and had to sit out most of the summer.
Krabbenhoft recently received scholarship offer from Kansas after
visiting Lawrence on an unofficial visit to watch the Jayhawks play Michigan State. He has narrowed his list to basically four schools. Krabbenhoft, who is
already being called the best player to come out of the state since Orlando
Magic's Mike Miller, is one of the country's top juniors and his recruitment
grew after a strong spring and summer.
Krabbenhoft recently visited Creighton, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Notre
Dame on unofficial visits. He has narrowed his focus to Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Kansas and Notre Dame, although Florida, which had former South Dakota native
Mike Miller, has worked hard to stay in the mix.
Krabbenhoft shined this summer as a member of the Dakota Schoolers and
Howard Pulley AASU teams. He also played in the Nike All-American Camp in
Indianapolis.
Krabbenhoft was named first-team all-state by the AP and led his team to
the final four of the South Dakota Class AA state championship.
Krabbenhoft played with Howard Pulley at the Memorial Day Classic, Rumble
in the Bronx and Nike Peach Jam play-in games and with the Dakota Schoolers in
events such as the Adidas Big Time Tournament and Mr. Basketball Showcase.
Notre Dame, Minnesota and Kansas are expected to be in Sioux Falls in the
next few weeks to watch Krabbenhoft at a practice or game.
Krabbenhoft is among College Basketball News’ top 25 juniors in the
country.
