6-3 guard Vince Banks of Atlanta (GA) South Atlanta committed to Miami of
Florida, but will use the additional year to work on his game and grades. He is
looking hard at Cincinnati. Banks averaged 29 points per game as a senior.
Maureece Rice of Philadelphia (PA) Strawberry Mansion set the city's all-time
scoring record, breaking the mark set by NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain. He is
getting looks from Big East schools like Villanova and St. John's.
6-10 Jackie Butler played in the McDonald's All-American and Sonny Vaccaro EA
Sports Roundball Classic and toyed with the idea of entering the NBA draft, He
signed with Mississippi State in the early signing period and is expected to
play for the Bulldogs in 2004-05. Butler played for the Southeast Pump N Run in
the recent adidas Big Time Tournament.
6-10 Ousmane Konate will be back for the second straight season for
Laurinburg. He signed with Missouri in the early signing period, but needed an
extra year. He recently de-committed to the Tigers and is hearing from
Charlotte, Xavier, USC and Arizona. He is originally from Senegal.
Longar Longar of Rochester (MN) John Marshall signed with Oklahoma in the
early signing period, but needed a year of prep school to improve his grades.
Longar played for the Team Minnesota in the adidas Big Time Tournament, which
lost in the semifinals in the Class A Division. He plans to play for the Sooners
in 2004-05.
6-8 Richard Dorsey from Durham (NC) Mt. Zion Christian Academy just turned
20, which made him ineligible to play high school ball and to play with the
Baltimore Select in the Big Time Tournament. He is considering Charlotte, LSU
and Miami of Florida and played once again at the adidas ABCD camp.
6-11 Andris Bedrins was the major find of the Big Time Tournament. The
Latvian native will be classified as a junior. However, he will play with the
prep team rather than the high school squad. He is a very skilled big man with a
good inside-outside game. NBA scouts were enamored with his all-around skills.
5-11 point guard Dwayne Foreman from Apopka (FL) High signed with Murray
State in the early signing period. He played for Team Breakdown in the Nike
Supershowcase.
7-6 center Jerry Sokolowski played in the 2002 Nike All-American Camp. The
Canadian big man toyed with entering the 2003 NBA Draft, but decided that he was
not ready for the pros. He is on the slow side, but you can't teach height.
6-4 guard Joey McCray played well in the recent adidas ABCD Cam p and
committed to Nebraska after the event. He was thought to be a bigger football
recruit at one time as a wide receiver and received interest from Michigan State
and Stanford on the gridiron.
6-11 Benny Sougetou of Central Africa is already hearing from LSU, Maryland
and Xavier.
6-8 Chad Ferguson played for the Las Vegas Rebel in the Big Time Tournament.
He played for Las Vegas Cheyenne alongside Lorenzo Wade, a recent Louisville
commitment.
C.J. Anderson of Cincinnati (OH) Winton Woods participated in the Big Time
Tournament with the Cleveland Bball Club 17's. His high school team, which
featured Brandon Foust and Andrew Lavender, lost in the Ohio State finals.
Laurinburg is hoping that the basketball bloodlines will pay off with their
other two newcomers. Chance McGrady is the younger brother of NBA star Tracy and
Sidney Lowe Jr is the son of the North Carolina Star point guard and former NBA
player and head coach.
