Hyde Park Stuns St. Paul Johnson 80-74

Chicago Hyde Park rallied from a 17-point deficit to surprise defending Class AAA St. Paul Johnson 80-74 in the Best Buy Holiday Classic semifinals. The loss snapped the Governors' 38-game winning streak and prevents a rematch of last year's title game of Johnson and Class AAAA champion Hopkins. Hyde Park will face Hopkins for the title, while Johnson meets Minnesota Transitions for third place.

Johnson led Hyde Park 47-30 at halftime, but the Thunderbirds scored the first ten points of the second half to cut the margin to seven. However, Johnson regained their composure by scoring four straight points to go up 51-40.

Johnson led 68-64 with 5:51, but went scoreless for over three minutes. Hyde Park took the lead at 69-68 and expanded the margin to five with 2:37 left in the contest.

Sophomore guard Kyle Davis scored on a layup to put Hyde Park up 75-70, but came down hard with an apparent knee injury. Estan Tyler countered with a lay-up of his own to cut the lead to 75-72 with 1:27 left in the game, but Hyde Park was able to play kee-away with their strong guard play and sealed the win with several key free throws down the stretch.

Kyle Davis led Hyde Park with 22 points. Fellow sophomore Marcellis Davis added 19 and Treyshawn Jones had ten points.

Estan Tyler paced the Governors with 26 points. Roosevelt Scott had 17 and Marcus Marshall scored 14 points.
